We are proud to announce that the Science Addition at Homewood-Flossmoor High School has received the Award of Distinction, the highest honor at the Exhibition of Educational Environments, held during the IASB • IASA • IASBO Joint Annual Conference.
This Net Zero Science Addition is a groundbreaking facility that exemplifies how sustainable design and STEM education can converge to create a forward-thinking educational ecosystem. Designed to achieve Zero Energy Certification, the building produces as much energy as it consumes through a high-performance building envelope, rooftop solar panels, and a geothermal system.
What Makes This Project Stand Out:
- Living Laboratory for Sustainability: Interactive dashboards, indoor and outdoor learning exhibits, and student-led tours immerse learners in real-time data and green design principles.
- State-of-the-Art STEM Facilities: Labs, prep rooms, and breakout spaces support collaborative, project-based learning aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.
- Biophilic and Outdoor Learning Elements: Native plant gardens, a planned rooftop lab, and a student amphitheater enhance student well-being and ecological exploration.
- Interdisciplinary Learning Zones: Spaces like the Learning Stair, Maker Space, and College Engineering Lab foster collaboration across biology, chemistry, engineering, and environmental science.
This project is more than a building—it’s a teaching tool, a community resource, and a bold statement about the future of education and sustainability. By integrating cutting-edge technology, biophilic design, and hands-on learning opportunities, the Science Addition prepares students to tackle global challenges with creativity and innovation.
