New Associate Principal Ryan Kelley announced at DLA Architects

A culture of mentorship fosters groundbreaking design and builds the leaders of tomorrow

Last month, Glen Ellyn, Illinois resident Ryan Kelley was named Associate Principal at DLA Architects, Ltd.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Thomas More College in Kentucky, he pursued a Bachelor of Architecture from Boston Architectural College (BAC). The BAC’s unique European-style educational model allowed Ryan to gain hands-on industry experience while earning his degree, giving him a strong foundation in both design and construction.

After completing his degree, Ryan and his wife Marissa made the big decision to move to Chicago to be closer to family in the Midwest. This move marked a turning point in his career as he began exploring how his design background could translate to larger commercial projects.

Over the years, Ryan has taken on diverse roles as a drafter, designer, and project architect. He thrives in the multitasking required in architecture and is drawn to projects that bridge different programs—like schools, museums, and training facilities—and has discovered a deep passion for educational design. Ryan sees architecture as more than buildings; he envisions spaces that foster connection, interaction, and tangible experiences for their users.

In 2018, Ryan joined DLA Architects, drawn by the firm’s expertise in educational design and its commitment to designing innovative spaces. Since then, he has become integral member of the team, known for his ability to navigate complex construction challenges while fostering strong, trusting client relationships.

A Visionary Approach to Architecture

As a Project Architect at DLA Architects, Ryan combines technical expertise with visionary leadership. He oversees project teams, solves intricate design challenges, and ensures every project aligns with time, budget, and quality expectations. Working closely with the Principal-in-Charge, Ryan plays a critical role throughout the architectural process, from initial planning to construction administration.

Ryan’s portfolio reflects his dynamic leadership and versatility. He is currently spearheading several impactful projects, including the Net-Zero Science Addition at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, designed to generate as much energy as it consumes. Additionally, he serves as Project Architect for Valley View School District’s new Early Childhood Center and the improvements at Westfield Middle School in Bloomingdale School District 13. He is also leading the Sanctuary Addition project at Immanuel Ministries Crystal Lake, further demonstrating his expertise in creating thoughtful, dynamic spaces. In each of these projects, Ryan showcases his ability to manage large, complex projects while delivering results that exceed client expectations.

“I’m passionate about problem-solving and helping clients shape a vision for their projects,” Ryan explains. “Designing dynamic spaces for learners and watching that vision take shape through construction is what inspires me. At the heart of every project is the ‘why’—the core design principles that guide every decision. Helping clients articulate those principles and ensuring they remain central throughout the process is my priority.”

One of Ryan’s standout projects is the Froio Memorial Garden at Bloomingdale Public Library. His team’s thoughtful design incorporated the library’s signature dragonfly emblem into sculptural lighting and shade canopies, creating an immersive environment enhanced by serpentine walls, curved benches, and welcoming seating areas.

“At DLA, we’ve built our firm on providing exceptional client service, led by the hands-on involvement of our partners,” says Ed Wright, DLA Principal. “With Ryan as an Associate Principal, we’re ensuring that this dedication to excellence continues to be a cornerstone of our approach as we grow.”
